Note From the Principal

Here at Russell Bede School, we believe that each child is a gift. During more than two decades of operation, we have adhered consistently to the principle that every child can learn – and enjoy doing it.

Since our founding in 1983, Russell Bede School has fostered a warm and intimate learning environment. We are located in a fully-renovated Victorian home, where a six-to-one student to teacher ratio allows us to tailor a student’s curriculum to his or her individual needs. Our emphasis has been on teaching children how to take full advantage of the classroom experience with the hope that they can quickly return to mainstream schools and succeed on their own.

In this nurturing atmosphere, all student participation is rewarded with respect so that children become active participants. This builds confidence and skills that the students can take back into other classroom settings.

Our focus is on academics – reading, comprehension, writing, math, study skills, organizational strategies and problem solving – with curriculum coordinated to state standards so that when children return to other school settings, they have been exposed to all the same materials. In fact, we use state textbooks wherever possible and modify or adapt them as needed to the skill level of the child. Teachers are fully credentialed and most have additional special education certifications such as speech and language therapy. Homework is assigned at every individual’s level so that the child can succeed independently.

At the end of each school year, we administer achievement tests to measure growth and it’s not unusual to see students jump as much as a grade and a half over the course of a single calendar year.

But Russell Bede offers more than academics. There is a welcoming and accepting environment in which students feel comfortable to make friends and share activities across all age levels. We also have physical education, drama and music instructors on staff to enrich our children’s learning experience. We believe this fosters the development of the full child – developing skills in areas such as sportsmanship, teamwork, communication, presentation, poise, and self-confidence.

And finally, we at Russell Bede School believe parents don’t give up the rights to their child when they drop them off for the day. In fact, we encourage parental involvement and offer a community where parents can explore their children’s learning styles so as to better facilitate their school experience for years to come.

By inquiring about Russell Bede, you are taking the first step toward improving your child’s education. With early intervention, students and parents, together, can learn the techniques needed to succeed. So we encourage you to call us, pay a visit, and talk with our teachers or parents to learn how our approach can work for you. We look forward to speaking with you.
